Paul Westerberg - First Act Guitar Studio
Paul played a private show on Sept. 9, 2005 at First Act Guitar Studio in Boston on Sept. 9, to celebrate the grand opening of their first retail store and to give us a sneak peek at the Paul Westerberg model guitar.Check out the "On The Download" blog from The Boston Phoenix for clips from an interview with Paul right after the show. Short clips, but good stuff, including a story about opening for Humble Pie. They also have a bunch of pictures posted. And finally, the review of the show that ran in the print version of The Boston Phoenix. And wait, wait...even MORE photos.
If that isn't enough info about the show, my two cents is, it was a blast. Paul played about 45 minutes or so and was joined 1/2 thru the show by Dave Minehan (who still has the best hair in rock and roll) and they really killed, can we get these two to do a tour please?
• High Time
• Born for Me
• September (new song, played in Mpls in Nov 2004 as well)
• I Want To Be Your Man (Roger Troutman cover, Paul intro'ed with "I hope none of you know this song")
• Mr Rabbit
• Long Black Veil
• How Can You Like Him?
Dave Minehan joins Paul for:
• Another Girl Another Planet
• "blues" (that's what it's called on the set list which I managed to snag, it was -- you guessed it -- a blues song about a woman leaving and the gist was hey honey, if you're leaving, you're leaving with nothing...any ideas anyone?)
• Valentine
• Alex Chilton
• House of the Rising Sun
What did Paul do with his brand-new PW guitar at the end of the set. I'll let The Boston Globe tell you:
Guitar studio hosts a smashing show
It was back to the future for fans of Paul Westerberg as the former Replacements frontman played a short, lively show Friday at the new Back Bay studio opened by First Act, the Boston-based guitar maker. (Formerly a Fender and Gibson guy, Westerberg's been endorsing First Act since he bought one of its axes on his last tour.) On a stage the size of a dining-room table, Westerberg was backed by former Neighborhoods singer-guitarist Dave Minehan and played to a crowd that included Buffalo Tom's Bill Janovitz, singer Juliana Hatfield, and O Positive's Dave Herlihy. In a nod to the devastation done by Hurricane Katrina, Westerberg closed with a raucous rendition of ''House of the Rising Sun," ending the spooky tune about New Orleans by smashing his guitar.

PW playing the new PW guitar model, that was later smashed. Note that the paper taped to the microphone is neither Paul's set list or Paul's lyrics -- it's hand-written (but not by Paul) lyrics to Springsteen's "Johnny Bye-Bye". Interesting... Click here for more great photos from the show, many thanks to Chris from The Acro-brats for sending these in.
