Lookin’ Up in Heaven Undone |
Jegtar |
|
Looking Up in Heaven: Jason Garner- Guitars and Vocals Marly Riggs- Keyboards "One of my all time favorites, a classic Westerberg song that sounds upbeat but has less than happy lyrics and an awesome bridge. I played it too slow by accident but decided to stick with it." Undone: Jason Garner- Guitars, Bass, Vocals, and fake drums One of the first songs we heard from Paul’s alter-ego. I always loved this song but never understood it, but being understood is not what Grandpaboy is about. email: Jegtar75@hotmail.com |

Painstakingly recorded late at night in my home studio to replicate the Westerberg recording process as closely as possible." web site: Posthumous Music on MySpace |

Here Comes A Regular I 'm In Trouble |
Richie Isaacs and Pauline Trouble |
|
Richie Isaacs, guitar, Porirua, New Zealand "Pauline Trouble"(Lynda W. Land), vocals and tambourine, Virginia. Both Isaacs and Trouble have been listening to, obsessing over, writing and playing music for many years. Though Isaacs missed the Mats their first time through, he has recently discovered them (as well as Paul's solo work,)and has proved a quick convert. Pauline has been a rabid fan since she first heard Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash, and The Replacements quickly became the backdrop of her college years. She was, at first, excited to hear about this compilation, but quickly realized she wouldn't be able to re-record any of her usual 'Mats covers-at least, not without help. Just prior to the BYOL Vol 2 call for submissions, she ruptured the tendon in her left pinkie, and, splinted, was temporarily unable to play her guitar. She quickly contacted Richie, who is an exceptional guitarist and close friend met over the internet. They'd collaborated over the net a couple of times before, and Richie was stoked to help his friend in need. "I sent him a list of 4 or 5 possible songs, and within a day or so he sent brilliant guitar tracks to both Here Comes A Regular and I'm In Trouble. I still use a little Tascam 4 track cassette recorder with no knowledge of computer recording programs. I'm lucky I found out how to transfer songs off the cassette! And, given that my 4-track is more of a three track now, I'm somewhat limited; expect lo-fi." Here Comes A Regular was a natural choice for Lynda, who has been a recovering alcoholic since the late eighties, and for whom this song seemed to tell part of her own story; A barroom mirror of sorts, it had helped her to see herself in way that she believes, among other things, helped her to recover. The song has sacred status to her now. Lynda has often played the song to warm up, or this year, to test out her video option on her camera...(She learned batteries don't last very long in those things.) I'm In Trouble was also a natural-Always easily one of Lynda's favorites of the harder songs( Kick Your Door Down and Don't Ask Why also ranking up there)."Richie and I both had a great time doing this; he played it so amazingly, allowing me to really let loose and let the old college kid out for a while. It brought back a lot of great memories of me bouncing around my room, singing along. It feels really great to sing that one! Also, Richie enjoys the double entendre having to do with my "band name." Haha!" web sites: Richie Isaacs on My Space, Pauline Trouble(Lynda W. Land) on My Space e-mails: richieisaacs@gmail.com, lswland62@yahoo.com |

| 7 | Black Eyed Susan | Ben Helm |
|
"I'm from Louisville, KY. I have been a Replacements/PW fan for
several years now. I first found out about PW from a book my dad
bought called "Nick Hornby's Songbook." in that book was the Paul
Westerberg song "Born For Me." I was hooked ever since."

| 8 | I Will Dare | John Kloberdanz |
|
Guitar and vocals by John Kloberdanz "I’m still questioning the audacity of picking one of Paul Westerberg’s best songs, a signature song on top of it. Never mind. “I Will Dare” is such a great song that it needed to be done. I may not have a band, but I tried to kick it into gear just the same. Thank you to everyone involved in putting this together, and if Paul reads this, please settle the bacon/fingernails debate already!" web sites: JohnKloberdanz.com |

Outta My System Merry Go Round/Someone Take the Wheel |
FreeRider |
|
"I was supposed to have gotten my friend John to play drums
on my demos, but he got too busy with work and his own band to lay
down the drum tracks. As a result, I had to stay with the digital drum
machine. Not the best of drum programming but hey, first take is the
best take, right?
On Merry Go Round/Someone Take the Wheel, I used the PW First Act guitar. I ran it direct into the board and used a signal processor for the distortion and chorus. On MGR, I have the guitars panned slightly left and right and when I segued into Take the Wheel, I panned the left panned guitar to dead center and faded the other electric out and brought up the chorused guitar to just a little right of dead center. And in true PW fashion, I mangled the lyrics in some spots as well! On Outta My System, I used a Les Paul Custom and a Steinberger for the guitars, both run direct into the board. I was too lazy to really program a better drum sequence for this song, so it sounds very demo-ish to me. Digital drums aren't my favorite things to work with anyway. I don't have a singing voice, so be kind....but as Paul once remarked about his own singing voice, "It's like my face. I'm not happy with it, but it's there." I completely understand what he means!" |

|
All instruments: Nudge Background noises: Nudglings "Another one of those under appreciated minimalistic Westy songs that was asking to be Nudgified. It was recorded (badly and all first takes) in the original BYOL session. So in true Westy fashion I decided to use an outtake this time around, just needed a little quick re-mix. Plus I was too lazy too learn anything else that I could play." web sites: Nudge on My Space, Nudge on Geocities |

that "Bookmark" was one of my favorite songs of his, which led to an
interesting conversation about a very personal, intense and haunting
song."
